I am going to replace my hard drive soon, so I will make a list of all programs I want and things I must do, so that I don’t forget.
- Of course, back up the Documents folder. Already done it last time I had problems, no changes since really.
- Back up the address book. Forgot to do that last time… Let’s hope I manage to get most back from the last backup I had done.
- Lauchbar.
- QuickSilver, to find out if it is actually better than Launchbar.
- LiteSwitch X.

I’ve had for quite some time problems with my router, a Netgear WGR614v4. At first it used to work pretty well with an XP desktop wired and an iBook G4 connected wirelessly, except that, first, most windows laptops could not connect to it wirelessly, and it my laptop did not connect to it for a while, it would sort of disable the wireless, so I would have to reboot the router every day. Not really a problem, just a bit irritating. Main problem is, that because of the almost complete lack of support from Netgear, it took a while to find the answers I needed.

Bruce Schneier, a security expert, talks about a new set of MD5 collisions generated by two researchers in Bochum. This renders MD5 not safe, i.e. completely useless. A very interesting read indeed.
For those of you who have never heard of MD5 before, a simple explanation is in order. Keep in mind that I am not a cryptography expert, and I am trying to understand these things myself. MD5 is what is known as a hash function. What it does effectively is, given a text, to produce a smaller text, consisting only of 128 characters, called the hash value, which can be computed very fast. The simplest way this can be used is to test if some huge download you just performed went ok. Some distributors offer the MD5 value of Read the rest of this entry »

TextMate has quickly become my left hand (I am
left-handed). I could not possibly live without it right now. Here are some of the
reasons:
- First and foremost, it is extremely stylish without sacrificing on performance
abilities. This is an editor that was built with both a regular user and the
programmer in mind. It has a very simple interface, without many bells and whistles,
but do not let that deceive you, we are talking about a very powerful editor, almost
paralleling vi and emacs in terms of power. On the other hand, it integrates

I fixed my little problem with the WeatherIcon. I wanted to make the various weather icons I was using in my Weather around the world page reflect the local time at the corresponding place, showing a sun if it was day and a moon if it was night. To do that I had to change the function WeatherIcon to accept one extra argument, and change one more line in the plugin file. Read the rest of this entry »
